VATESI comment on progress of hot trials of solid radioactive waste treatment and storage facility

State enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) is carrying out hot trials in the solid radioactive waste treatment and storage facility (trial tests of technological operations with radioactive waste), project B2/3/4.

During these hot trials non-compliances of certain equipment to the technical design requirements were discovered.

INPP has stopped all operation of radioactive waste treatment with the equipment that is non-compliant to the requirements on the 29th of December 2017 and will be able to restart operation only after eliminating the specified non-compliances of the equipment. The trials of other equipment are being carried out.

The specified non-compliances cannot be classified as incidents according to the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES), because the dose limits of operating personnel were not exceeded and there were no identified releases of radioactive material into the environment, also there were no cases determined of exceeded dose rate limits on the containers loaded with radioactive waste.

Full responsibility for the safety of all nuclear installations on the site falls on the operating organization – the state enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.

State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) is the state regulatory and supervisory authority in the nuclear safety field in Lithuania.

Information about any events or incidents related to the safety of the public, if there would be any, would be announced immediately.
