VATESI received an application from the State Radioactive Waste Management Agency to issue a licence for the decommissioning of the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility

On 15 January 2018, VATESI received an application of the State Enterprise Radioactive Waste Management Agency (RATA) to issue a licence for the decommissioning of the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility.

VATESI will make a decision on authorization of the decommissioning activity after evaluation of all safety case documents that are required for obtaining a licence.

RATA requests decommissioning licence in order to remove radioactive waste and radionuclide- contaminated structures and soil from the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility. According to the project, radioactive waste will be sorted and shipped to the Ignalina NPP radioactive waste treatment facilities, where it will be processed and stored.

During the decommissioning of Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility 300 m³ of radioactive waste will be generated. This amounts of radioactive waste of Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility is only 0,23 percent of all  radioactive waste that will be treated during all decommissioning process of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.

After decommissioning of Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility, it will be possible to use a site for other activities without any restrictions.

Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility is a 200 m³ capacity monolithic reinforced concrete basement located at a depth of 3 metres in Bartkuškis Forest, Municipality of Širvintai District. This “Radon”-type waste storage facility was closed in 1989. It stores radioactive waste collected from industrial enterprises, medical and scientific institutions during the 1963-1989 period. The facility is located 9 km from Maišiagala and 40 km away from Vilnius.
