VATESI issued the licence for construction and operation of a very low-level radioactive waste disposal facility

December 23, 2015. The State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) issued the licence to the State Enterprise Ignalina NPP authorising the construction and operation of very low-level radioactive waste disposal facility (Ignalina NPP Decommissioning Project B19-2).

Very low-level radioactive waste disposal facility will be constructed in Visaginas municipality territory near closed Ignalina NPP. The landfill-type disposal facility will consist of three modules and each will be able to store about 20 thousand cubic metres of radioactive operational and decommissioning waste from Ignalina NPP. Licence holder is planned to start construction of the facility in the middle of 2016 and commission to operation in 2018. Facility modules with radioactive waste will be filled during 20 years, after it will be closed and active surveillance will be activated for the 30 years. Next 70 years the limits to use the land near disposal facility will be applicable.

State Enterprise Ignalina NPP applied for the disposal facility construction and operation licence in June, 2012. Since then, VATESI had evaluated documents submitted for review: if the applicant demonstrate compliance with all applicable safety requirements for whole facility life-cycle (including post-decommissioning period) and if applicant is prepared for the construction of the facility.

State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate currently supervises the conditions of nine licences issued to Ignalina NPP.
