VATESI issued the licence for operation of a very low-level radioactive waste storage facility

May 22, 2013. The State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) issued the licence to the State Enterprise Ignalina NPP authorising the operation of a very low-level radioactive waste storage facility (Ignalina NPP Decommissioning Project B19-1).

 

Very low-level radioactive waste storage facility is the building in the territory of Ignalina NPP. It is planned to store here about 4 thousand cubic meters of low-level radioactive waste. This radioactive waste will be transported for the final disposal to the other facility with non-complex artificial barriers by the campaigns every 2 years. Total amount of very-low level radioactive waste could reach about 60 thousand cubic meters.  

 

The licence has the conditions. Ignalina NPP shall review and update information in safety analysis report if changes of radioactive waste characterization criteria will be envisaged. Also it is declared, that no nuclear material should not be treated in this facility.

 

State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate currently supervises the conditions of eight licences issued to Ignalina NPP.
