Lithuania made good progress in the siting, design and licensing of waste handling, storage and disposal facilities

It was stated in the third Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties under the Joint Convention that took place in Vienna on May 10-21, 2009 where the countries’ reports were discussed. Lithuania was in a review group together with Belarus, China, France, Estonia, Senegal, Slovakia and South Africa. Additional questions were raised by Ukraine.

 

The reporter Bill West from the United Kingdom pointed good practises and progress made by Lithuania. Also he outlined main future challenges in licensing of spent fuel and radioactive waste storage facilities, management and preservation of knowledge critical for the safe decommissioning and radwaste management, the long term storage and disposal of spent fuel, the long term storage and disposal of graphite and continuation of adequate funding for such projects.

 

 

Lithuania was asked additional questions about spent fuel management, disposal of waste and other technical questions. The conclusions of the meeting were favourable: the Republic of Lithuania is complying with its obligations as regards all the articles of the Convention.
