18 July 2023, State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) issued a licence to State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) to transport nuclear fuel cycle materials and nuclear and fissile materials listed in Annex 1 to the Law on Nuclear Safety of the Republic of Lithuania.

In order to obtain the licence, INPP had to justify that its activities would be safe and would comply with the requirements of the legislation.

In the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, INPP will be able to transport abandoned nuclear fuel cycle materials and nuclear and fissile materials from other generators of radioactive waste listed in Annex 1 of the Law on Nuclear Safety of the Republic of Lithuania to the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant's on-site facilities in Visaginas municipality for management of radioactive waste. The licence also authorises the transport of nuclear fuel cycle materials (radioactive waste, including nuclear materials and fissile materials) from Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility which is under decommissioning to waste management facilities on INPP site.
