International cooperation

The objective of the international cooperation is to take over the knowledge and the best practice of other countries in regulating the nuclear and radiation safety and the physical security and to share the experience acquired by VATESI.

 

VATESI take part in the activities of the international organisations and represent the interests of Lithuania. Specialists are also involved in the working groups developing international requirements and rules, exchange the experience and the best practice in the regulation and supervision of the activities in the nuclear energy area.

 

Cooperation with international organisations:

 

 

VATESI specialists participate in various working groups aimed at upgrading the level of the nuclear and radiation safety and the physical security both in the country and in the whole of Europe.  Moreover, we have established cooperation links with the regulatory authorities of the nuclear and radiation safety of the neighbouring and other countries: the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU), the Nuclear Regulation Authority of Japan (NRA) etc.

 

In accordance with the inter-governmental agreements with Denmark, Norway, Latvia, Poland and Belarus VATESI is obligated to provide information about nuclear events in Lithuania. We also exchange information under the cooperation agreements with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM).

 

Meeting international commitments

VATESI meets the commitments of Lithuania under the Convention on Nuclear Safety, the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, the Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident, the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and other international agreements.
