Report of the IRRS follow-up mission in Lithuania is published

he International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) submitted to Lithuania the Report of the Integrated Regulatory Review Service follow-up mission (hereinafter referred to as the IRRS follow-up mission).

The report is available on the VATESI website and is also published on the website of IAEA.

During the IRRS follow-up mission, conducted from 16 November to 2 December 2020, the experts noted that Lithuania has implemented 26 out of the 27 recommendations and 31 out of the 32 suggestions and drew attention to the improved integration of IAEA safety standards in the legal regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety. This perfectly demonstrated maturity of Lithuanian nuclear and radiation safety regulatory system as well as this system flexibility in accepting the progressive international tendencies.

The team of experts submitted one new recommendation to VATESI regarding the updating of the safety analysis before the closure of radioactive waste repositories and one new suggestion to consider broadening the range of available guidance for inspection of nuclear facilities. One new suggestion was presented to the Radiation Protection Centre on improvement of radiation safety regulation of uncontrolled sources of ionizing radiation.

Based on the mission report, VATESI together with the Radiation Protection Centre and the Ministry of Energy prepare a plan of measures for the implementation of the recommendations and suggestions presented in the report, which will be approved in the nearest future.
