VATESI accepted an application from the State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant to issue a licence for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities – both units of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (Ignalina NPP) and other related to them radioactive waste management facilities .

VATESI will make a decision on authorization of the decommissioning after evaluation of all safety case documents that are required for obtaining a licence.

According to the licence applied for, SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant is planning to carry out the decommissioning of Ignalina NPP Unit 1 and Unit 2, storage facilities (buildings 155, 155/1, 157, 157/1) of solid radioactive waste, its retrieval facilities and treatment facilities (building 150) of liquid radioactive waste.

It is important to note that this license will be issued only when all spent nuclear fuel will be shipped from both units of the Ignalina NPP to the Spent Fuel Storage Facility (SFSF-2). It is planned to be completed by the end of 2022.
