Lithuania submitted National Report on Implementation of Council Directive 2011/70/EURATOM

In July 2018, VATESI submitted the 2nd National Report on Implementation of Council Directive 2011/70/EURATOM of 19 July 2011 Establishing a Community Framework for the Responsible and Safe Management of Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste to the European Commission.

Report presents detailed information how Lithuania implements safety objectives for nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management that are set out in the Directive and ensures the high level of nuclear safety in Lithuania's nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management facilities and overview of progress of national Radioactive Waste Management Development Programme.

From 2015, when the first National Report was submitted, Lithuania adopted new Radioactive Waste Management Development Programme and made amendments of the Law on Radioactive Waste Management and other legal acts regulating safety of radioactive waste management.

During the recent period, industrial operation of a new spent nuclear fuel storage facility (SFSF-2) was started, licences to operate solid radioactive waste removal from old storage facilities and to operate a new complex of solid radioactive waste treatment and storage facilities as well as construction licence for short-lived low and intermediate level radioactive waste repository were issued.  Also, the construction of a short-lived very low level radioactive waste repository has started and Lithuania continuously implements Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant's decommissioning projects.

This Report was prepared in consultation with Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Environment, Radiation Protection Centre, State Enterprise Radioactive Waste Management Agency and State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.
