VATESI issued the licence for new Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility

On 20 September 2016, Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) issued the operating license for the new Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISFSF, B1 Project) of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP).
Operating license validates INPP for the commissioning of the facility and start hot trial tests with 10 new design casks. During the tests, the new casks will be loaded with spent fuel and moved to the new Interim storage facility. Facility operation will be tested in real conditions with spent fuel.
The results of successfully performed tests will lead VATESI to grant a permission for facility commercial operation. INPP have plans to move all spent fuel to the new Interim Spent Fuel Storage facility until the end of 2022.
New Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility is located in Visaginas municipality in the premises of INPP in Lithuania. Spent fuel will be stored in specifically designed casks CONSTOR®RBMK1500/M2. The full loaded cask will weight 118 tones. INPP plans to store about 190 containers with about 16000 spent fuel rods during a period of 50 years.
