13 June 2016. The State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) updated the licence to the State Enterprise Radioactive Waste Management Agency (RATA) for operation of Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility in Širvintai region Bartkuškis forest.

The Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility is filled with wastes generated at industrial, medical and scientific research facilities until 1989. The volume of waste accumulated in the storage facility is 120 cubic metres.

Delayed dismantling option is chosen for decommissioning of the Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility and radioactive waste and equipment will be stored in the facility until radioactive waste storages or repositories will be installed at Ignalina NPP site. Then waste will be retrieved from the Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility and the site in Širvintai region will be cleaned up.
